Planet Organic Market Teams up with Canadian Cancer Society to Help Raise Funding to Fight Cancer
Planet Organic Market will be selling daffodils at all store locations for $5 per bunch in support of the Canadian Cancer Society this month to help find a cure for cancer. Funds raised with Daffodil Days are a part of overall fundraising which goes toward advocacy and research programs for treatments, prevention, and to find a cure for the life-threatening disease.
“We’re pleased to help an amazing organization like the Canadian Cancer Society,” says, Diane Shaskin, co-founder and Vice-President of Marketing for Planet Organic Markets. “We want to help support the real heroes; patients and their families.”
Over the past 45 years, communities across Canada have purchased daffodils in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. The daffodil has long been a symbol of hope in the fight against cancer and it is once again time to celebrate the inspiration of the Daffodil Days®. In one day, volunteers manage to raise $6,000, with proceeds going to prevention programs including education and awareness initiatives throughout Canada.
Dr. Roy Cheung (MDFRCSC), a head and neck surgical oncologist in Victoria, says, “The more funding our researchers obtain, the closer we are to fighting cancer. A significant amount of cancers can be prevented through healthy living.”
The Canadian Cancer Society’s research suggests as much as one-third of all cancers may be related to what we eat and drink. Health Canada suggests that everyone should eat five to ten servings of vegetables and fruits per day and choose high fiber, lower fat foods. Everybody should try to limit alcohol intake to one to two drinks each day.
The Canadian Cancer Society claims that smoking causes about 30% of all cancer deaths in Canada. Being a non-smoker and avoiding second-hand smoke is one way to prevent cancer. “Smoking increases the risk of developing cancers of the mouth, throat, larynx, and lungs,” states Dr. Cheung. Health Canada estimates that more than 300 non-smokers die from lung cancer each year due to second-hand smoke.
The Canadian Cancer Society is an organization made up of volunteers whose mission is to eradicate cancer and enhance the quality of life of those people living with the disease.
