What Is Organic?

11/29/2006

"Organic" refers to the way agricultural products including foods and fibres, such as cotton are grown and processed. The word "organic" on a label stands for a commitment to agricultural production which strives for a balance with nature, using methods and materials which are of low impact to the environment.

Organic production systems:

1. Replenish and maintain soil fertility
2. Eliminate the use of toxic and persistent chemicals and fertilizers
3. Build a biologically diverse agriculture

ORGANIC FOODS are minimally processed to maintain the integrity of the food
without artificial ingredients, preservatives or irradiation.

CERTIFIED ORGANIC means that a product has been produced in accordance to
specific guidelines and rigorous organic production standards, as established by a certifying agency.

These standards include:

1. Land on which organic food or fibers are grown must be free of
prohibited substances for three years prior to certification.
2. Farmers and processors must keep detailed records and materials used
in growing or processing organic products.
3. All methods and materials are annually inspected by a third-party
certifier.
4. All farmers and handlers are required to maintain written organic
plans detailing their management practices.

All of our certified organic products will have this shown on the packaging
verifying the certification. There will also be the third parties certifying
certificate label on the packaging. All of our fresh certified organic
produce has either a sticker label with a prefix number nine label on it or the
certification will be stamped onto the box of the product.
