Planet Organic Market Announces Innovative Compost Program

(Calgary, AB) - Planet Organic Market, Canada’s largest national chain of organic supermarkets is pleased to announce an innovative composting partnership with Clean Calgary and P.E.L. Recycling to shrink Calgary’s “waste-line”. Started in August 2007, the three companies started working together to recycle organic waste from Planet Organic Market’s Elbow Drive location, through the East Calgary Compost Centre. To date, the program has kept 6 tonnes of organic waste out of the landfill, but more importantly, kept nearly 8 tonnes of greenhouse gasses out of the air, right here in Calgary.

Every month, P.E.L. Recycling picks up waste from the Planet Organic Market Calgary South produce department, plus scraps from the kitchen and deli, and transports it to the East Calgary Compost Centre. The waste is then combined with other organic materials to break down and compost, creating nutrient-rich soil.

“We’re always looking for new ways to reduce our ecological footprint and be good to the Earth. As it turns out, our newest initiative happens to be one of the oldest green traditions – composting!” says Diane Shaskin, Co-founder of Planet Organic. “Composting organic waste is one of the simplest ways we can contribute to the health of our Planet, plus improve the health of our own gardens.”

Planet Organic Market plans to extend this program to its second Calgary location sometime in 2008.
